DRUG ACTION SERVICE OF THE BAHAMAS

Drug Free Achievers & I'm Special Program

Beginning in 1987, DAS's service strategy, change from a rehabilitation approach to a proactive demand reduction education strategy serving the Bahamian community-at- large with a focused emphasis on primary and secondary school students. Our award winning "Drug Fee Achievers (DFA)" program was focused on individual students 'in the secondary schools and our "I'm Special" program was directed towards the training of primary school teachers. This reorientation was based on experience, both in the Bahamas and the United States, that the "I'm Special" program is the most effective strategy for promoting healthy lifestyles through demand reduction disciplines. Children who are exposed continuously to the positive self-esteem character development model become more productive citizens.

Through our "I'm Special" teacher workshops, DAS is able to reach a wider and greater number of primary school children. We estimate that over a three year period, for every trained teacher who implements the "I'm Special" program in their respective school, more than one hundred students are exposed to the programs self esteem and character development concepts. From a cost/benefit standpoint, DAS teacher workshops returned the greatest benefit to the largest population for the funds spent.
