DRUG ACTION SERVICE OF THE BAHAMAS

About Us

EXTENDING OUR OUTREACH ‑ DRUG ACTION SERVICE PUBLIC RELATIONS

On a periodic basis, DAS publishes a topical Newsletter that is distributed to DAS's membership, corporate sponsors and the public at‑large upon request. Each Newsletter includes specific issues concerning different types of illegal drugs, which are transported through and/or used locally in the Bahamas. For example, the DAS Newsletter was one of the first publications in the Bahamas to describe the life threatening dangers of OxyContin, a legal prescription drug which was finding its way into the Bahamas. Other articles include "Heroin Addition and Abuse ... .. Position Statement on Marijuana For Medical Use" and "The Fallacy of Harm Reduction."

The publication of the Newsletter is written, typed, edited and proofed completely by DAS volunteers. The only costs associated with the newsletter are printing and distribution expenses. Nevertheless, these costs are a major restraint on producing more informative newsletter and publications. DAS feels that with proper funding, four (4) quarterly newsletters could be produced annually. Funding at present comes from internal sources including out of pocket contributions and volunteer funding.

In expanding DAS's Community Outreach program, the DAS Speakers Bureau has expanded the scope and reach of its communications and public relations activities. Over the prior year, DAS volunteers have been guest speakers at numerous service clubs both in the Bahamas and the United States. In addition, in conjunction with the Pilot Clubs of the Bahamas, two DAS volunteers traveled to Abaco to participate in Pilots' Anchor Clubs Mini Conference. DAS's Workshop presentation, "Overcoming Peer Pressure," was attended by approximately 60 (Sixty) Secondary School students, from the Islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco. Following this presentation, a lively Question and Answer session ensued.
